TRANSMISSION 001 / 19 OCTOBER 2026

The flight notes.

Hyperdrive is a local filename search engine. These measurements cover the compiled macOS search engine. They are not a comparison with another search engine or a guarantee for every query.

0.48 ms on a 6.51-million-file index

The measured index contained 6,508,588 files, plus 548,890 folders, links, and other entries. The table below shows search latency in that same index. The fastest highlighted query returned 50 file results.

What we measured

#Query profileRows returnedSearch p95
1Files filter50 (limited)0.48 ms
2All types50 (limited)0.587 ms
3PDF filter215.649 ms

Each row represents a specific filename query and filter, with 100 accepted fresh samples after 10 warmups. The first two use the same three-character query. The third uses a seven-character query. Across the full 11-cell profile, 11 changed-revision attempts were rejected and retried.

What the clock includes

Search time measures execution inside the engine. It excludes interface state updates and physical display time. A p95 value means 95% of accepted samples completed within that interval.

The test index

The base held 6,508,588 files, 538,374 folders, 8,798 links, and 1,718 other entries: 7,057,478 total entries, including retained generated test trees. It had 52,449 live overlay records when the profile opened. This is an index count, not a claim of 7 million unique files or complete coverage of the computer.

The macOS profile ran against a changing local home tree. Coverage was marked partial with two policy exclusions: the account Library and one nested mounted volume. Ordinary query result sets were not independently walked across the whole tree. A separate controlled live-fixture check supplied exact-result checks.

What affects performance

Latency depends on the query, filters, result limit, cache state, file tree, and machine. An independent, matched competitor benchmark is still required before we make a comparative speed claim. The planned release is a command-line search tool with agentic use built in, coming to macOS, Windows, and Linux. The benchmark above covers macOS only. Release requirements will be announced later.

Tested on macOS with an Apple M2 Max and 32 GB RAM. Performance varies with hardware and workload.
